The GWAR has been waived for students graduating in Spring 2021, Summer 2021, Fall 2021, or Spring 2022 and therefore the WEPT is no longer being offered.
In a February 23, 2021 memo from the Chancellor’s Office, the CSU authorized the temporary, limited suspension of the California State University Graduate Writing Assessment Requirement (GWAR) and directed that any high-stakes examinations be suspended. Students will not be required to fulfill the GWAR (Graduate Written Assessment Requirement) in order to graduate in Spring 2021, Summer 2021, Fall 2021, or Spring 2022. If you think you'll be graduating during one of those terms, there is nothing that you need to do. If you think you'll be graduating after those terms, we would suggest that you check with your advisor for future updates about the requirement. We anticipate updates from the Chancellor’s Office on the status of GWAR beyond those semesters.
The University continues to offer Writing Intensive Curriculum courses (WICs), which fulfill the GWAR, even during this period in which the GWAR is not required. Taking a WIC course is always a good idea if it works with your academic plan and your schedule as it gives you the opportunity to truly hone your writing skills as an upper-division student. A list of WIC courses for the current term is listed here.
