About
Open Office Hours: Thursdays, 11am-12pm and by appointment
Sakina Bryant is Faculty Director of the Sonoma State Writing Center, housed within the Learning and Academic Resource Center (LARC). Sakina taught for the Departments of English & Philosophy from 2010-2021, including: Engl 99T, Intro Composition (100A/B, 101, EOP), Humanities Learning Communities courses in Shakespeare and Sci-Fi & Identity, Intro to Critical Thinking, and SYRCE (Second Year and Research Creative Experience). She is the recipient of the 2018 Sonoma State Excellence in Teaching Award.
Sakina has served SSU in many literacy capacities, co-coordinating/coordinating WEPT & WIC under the CSU GWAR mandate, helping teach faculty to teach writing across the disciplines, helping WASC literacy assessment, and serving on the ad hoc Writing Coordinators Committee. She has performed campus-wide service in shared governance as a six-year lecturer senator, plus other committees and subcommittees. She has also been a member of many writerly collectives, tutored at two writing centers, and has volunteered as an English teacher in Laos.
Outside of SSU, Sakina served as an elected Steering Committee Member for the Interdisciplinary Humanities Collective, the BABEL Working Group. This informed her non-hierarchical, interdisciplinary, and inclusive principles.
Additionally, Sakina is a writer herself and has worked as a professional writing consultant and coach, a content/developmental editor, and more.
There is nothing that Sakina feels more passionately about than people learning how to write (and read) to meet their academic, personal, civic, political, and economic aspirations.
